Front view of Edo House of Assembly Under tight security |
The insecurity in and around the Edo State House of Assembly
came to the fore over the weekend when a car parked within the premises of the
Edo State House of Assembly complex was stolen amidst the heavy presence of
battle ready security operative all around the Assembly complex.
SILNETNEWS gathered
that on Friday 7th July 2017, while members of the civil society
organizations and other stakeholders were gathered at the main chamber of the House
of Assembly for the public hearing of the Anti-Grazing bill, a car belonging to
the Director of Administration of the Conference of NGOs (CONGOs), Comrade
Harrison Izekor which was parked at the Premises of the House of Assembly was
stolen. The most worrisome part of the
development was the heavy presence of the Nigeria police and Civil defense Corp
with over ten Hilux Van, an armored Tank and over 80
security personnel spread around the length and breadth
of the Assemble parameters. Still, a yet to be identified person walked
in and stole away the said vehicle.
SILNETNEWS crew
yesterday visited the Assembly Complex to ascertain the state of Security in
and around the Complex, to our dismay the House of Assembly Complex was not
only insecure but also constitute a threat to person within and around the
premises. The first thing visitor will notice on visiting the complex is
the total collapse of all security gadget around the complex. The meter
detector leading to the main chamber have been broken down for long, the CCTV
cameras are outdated and non-functional, even the old men who are stationed at
the gate as security guards and gate watchers certainly do not have the capacity
to detect or curtail crime within and around the Assembly Complex.
A cross section of our
correspondents who spoke concerning the stolen vehicle were of the opinion that
if the House of Assembly Premises can be so insecure, it goes to show what plays
out in the day to day lives of the average citizens of Edo State. Little
wonders several crimes in the state always go undetected. A Member of the Edo
Civil Society Organization (EDOSCO) who spoke on condition of anonymity told
SILNETNEWS that with the state of insecurity in the Country, if someone can
enter the House of Assembly Complex and steal a car unnoticed,
then someone can also enter and plant a bomb within the complex unnoticed.
This view was further
corroborated by a strongly worded letter (made available to SILNETNEWS)
addressed to the Speaker RT Hon Okonoboh and signed by Comrade Blessed Jatt,
Director of Strategy, Research and Advocacy on behalf of the Conference of
Non-Governmental Organizations in Edo State (CONGOs) in which the Conference
express their disappointment over the insecurity in and around
the Assemble premises
