The university management led by it Vice Chancellor Prof Faraday Orumwense without regard to the current economic situation in the country and how it will affect the student and their parents and care givers went ahead to announce and publish the new increment without consulting the student Union Government for input.
The student
union government after much consultation and deliberation decided to stage a
peaceful protest to press home their dissatisfaction
with the inhuman increment which coincided with the university Founders day and
convocation ceremony. In a swift reaction, the Vice Chancellor other that the
school be shut down and that all students should vacate the hostel and return
home till further notice.
On the 12th of December, 2017, management
issued another circular that announce the suspension of the activities of the
Executive and Parliamentary organ of the students union government, and that a
panel had been constituted to investigate what it termed students unrest.
Again, instead of addressing the course for which students are taking the pain
to protest under scorching sun, the panel, evidently, from students who had
appeared before it, turned out to be a gathering of an appendage of the vice
chancellor’s office armed with a major question that can be correctly summed as
thus: Why did you embarrass the university management?
The management claimed that
the peaceful protest on the day of convocation embarrassed its national and
international image; a “misconduct” which the leadership of the student union
and some selected students who were active in the anti-fee hike protest would
have to pay dearly for. The Vice Chancellor Prof Faraday Orumwense indeed, had
commenced its vendetta and witch-hunt by
first suspending the activities of students’ union leaders and now out rightly
rusticating them.ALSO READ: Cows, Fulani Herdsmen chased out pupils, takes over class rooms in Benin
MILITARIZATION
OF THE UNIVERSITY
SILNET NEWS gathered that the fear of a continuous
peaceful protest, led the management to deployed dozens of heavily armed
soldiers on campus. It was as though the University of Benin has suddenly
transformed to Sambisa Forest, all the gates that led to the University were
suddenly shut, while the soldiers paraded our campus. The mandate of the armed
force was to suppress, repress and oppress students protesting peacefully. The
brutality exhumed by the soldiers led scores of students who were badly injured
flee the brutality, while several unlucky students were mercilessly brutalized
in the most horrifying and heartless manner, includingone of the executive who
was slapped publicly. Some students were dehumanized as they were ordered to do
“frog jump” publicly.
