Gender Inclusiveness: Women pushing the discussion on gender Consciousness

Some Women Intellectuals, Gender Advocates and Students yesterday converged at the Center for Gender and Peace Building, University of Benin to push for gender sensitivity, gender Consciousness and Gender parity within the school environment and the larger national civic space

Delivering a lecture at the quarterly seminar of the Center title “Gender Sensitivity in the University Environment”,

Barr. Iryn Ekhorose Omorogiuwa

Barr. Iryn Ekhorose Omorogiuwa the state chairperson International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Edo) stressed the need for more women active engagement and participation in leadership and governance across all levels and spheres of human endeavors,  She called on more women to contest for position of leadership and avail themselves for political appointment stating that it is crucial for women to be in the room where this power decision are made because that is the only way they can improved and increase their socio-economic status. She then admonished women to believe in themselves; know opportunities when they are there; to get into investment and pursue education as that will increase their negotiating power.

She then harp on the need for sponsorship and support for women entrepreneurs at all level as well as the need to engage credible women to hold leadership position in other to create gender parity.

Dr Anwuli Irene Ofuani-Sokolo a Private Property Lawyer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Benin while delivering the second lecture on Gender Consciousness, stated that $exual harassment is not limited to one gender alone as both males and female can become victim of sexual harassment. She encourage participant to learn to respect peoples space as $exual harassment is not only about $ex but also about unsolicited touching and encroachment into other peoples space. She acknowledged the fact that cultures are changing hence women should brace up and become active participant in national development.

While speaking on a private interview with Silnet news, the chief host and Board Chairperson of the Center for Gender and Peace Building, University of Benin, Professor Mrs. Roselyn Olubor reiterated that there will be more forum like this one to sensitized the public and create mass awareness on the progress at the Center particularly the newly introduced Masters programs on Gender and Peace Building. And that plans are on for strategic partnership in the areas of technical support, technical know-how and resource mobilization.

On her part, the ever pragmatic and energetic Director of the Center for Gender and Peace Building, University of Benin, Prof Mrs. Josephine Mokwunye while recounting some of the achievement of the Center within the few months of her assumption of office, she expressed happiness that within these few months of her stewardship, the Senate of the University of Benin has just approved a gender policy for the school which will now become an operational document in the University of Benin. She also highlighted the Masters Program of the Center which has been hanging for several years but has now also effectively taken off with lectures currently ongoing. She affirmed that plans have also been concluded to commence the certificate and post Graduate Diploma program in Gender and Peace Building Center.

On plan to build synergy with other likeminded institutions, the Director stated that the doors of Center for Gender and Peaces Building, University of Benin are open for funding, partnerships, sponsorship, collaborations and content development. She called on NGOs as well as other organizations, Institutions and INGOs that work in the areas of Gender, Peace building and SDGs to reach out to the Center.
